Why Cindy Sheehan is okay
This article is going to respond to the following quote:
I’ve been thinking more and more about the left’s "defenses" of Cindy Sheehan, which seems to amount to "Her son died, you heartless monster! She could go on a murderous rampage, killing people indiscriminately, and it would still be justified by the fact that her son died!" It’s as if Sheehan is no longer bound by the rules of civil society, and so even though she’s been lying and spreading vile, hateful ideas, she’s supposed to get a total pass.
"Day 2: Bashing Cindy Sheehan" Lone Star Times, Owen Courrèges, 13 August 05. http://lonestartimes.com/index.php?p=1341.
Now, I don't even know why this has been published. It's ludicrous. Nevertheless, I am going to argue against it. Cindy Sheehan is not going around demanding that we should kill people. She's trying to stop killing of innocent people. Remember, Sept 11 killed around 3000 civilians. The Iraq war has killed around 25,000 civilians, plus military deaths (http://www.iraqbodycount.net/). That means that the United States must have a pretty good reason to still be at war.
By saying that Sheehan is breaking the rules of a civil society by protesting is a pretty far out statement. Since when have non-civil societies tolorated dissention? By protesting she is exercising a protected right of a civil, democratic society. Being allowed to contest the Government is a right that has been granted to us. In fact, as many right-wing Americans will attest to, this mistrust of Government even allows them to hold firearms. Sheehan is merely exercising her rights, and is attempting to hold President GW Bush to account. The death of her son is a big price to pay for a war that may have just been based on the need for a secure supply of oil, or possibly to promote the interests of Israel.
Of course, the status of these claims are yet to be determined. These claims, one presumes, are the "vile, hateful ideas" that Courrèges rallies against. The fact that she may be making these claims, in itself is vile. If she fabricates evidence, then things change. All what is happening now however is that the President must make a strong case against her. He must either rebut her claims or bite the bullet and face the music.
So, when all is said and done the left's defenses do not ammount to an acceptence of indescriminate killing. That's what she's trying to stop. Cindy Sheehan is okay.
